koodie -noun Slang. A child or tween who loves exploring the world of food – not just wolfing down corndogs but experimenting with new flavors, cooking or even watching Food Network TV; a mini-gourmet; usually has been trained or encouraged by a foodie parent.
It’s a major buzzword in the food world right now, as anyone who’s dined at a sushi restaurant, only to hear a toddler at the next table say, “More edamamae, please!” knows all too well.
The word “koodie” was coined by Phil Lempert, a leading food trends analyst and CEO of The Lempert Report and SupermarketGuru.com. Considering how many youngsters we know who drink kefir by the four-pack, we’re not surprised. Kids are hungry for more than just French fries and chicken nuggets; they crave the same kinds of exciting, tasty, adventurous tidbits we do. Goat cheese pizza; peanut chicken satay; tuna and avocado rolls; dark chocolate-covered caramel; and, yes, tangy, effervescent Lifeway kefir.
If you’re a parent looking to indulge your koodie at home, try a bottle of Probugs or the kefir in the more grown-up bottle. Try mixing it with some organic granola and sprinkling it with dried fruit for a fancy snack, or serving it in a chilled glass for a very adult-like drink.
